🌅

Golden Hour

The window just after sunrise and before sunset. Light is warm, low-angled, and directional. Shadows are long and soft. The most coveted window for portraits, landscapes, and architecture.

Best for portraits
🌆

Blue Hour

Civil twilight — sun is 0–6° below the horizon. No direct sunlight. Sky is a deep, even blue. Artificial lights balance naturally with the sky. Ideal for cityscapes and long-exposure streets.

Best for cityscape

White Hour

Deep twilight — sun is 6–18° below the horizon. Sky shifts from purple to blue before full darkness. A rarely-photographed window with surreal, moody tones and first visible stars.

Rare & moody
🌑

Astronomical Dusk

Sun drops 18° below the horizon — sky is fully dark. This is the threshold for astrophotography: Milky Way, star trails, and deep-sky objects become visible.

Night photo start

💡 Latitude Note

Golden hour duration depends heavily on latitude. Near the equator, windows can be as short as 20–25 minutes. At latitudes above 45°N/S, golden hour can last over an hour. Plan accordingly.

📍 Plan golden hour for these cities

Cities renowned for extraordinary golden hour light

The combination of architecture, elevation, and clear skies makes these destinations exceptional during the golden hour window.

Practical tip: Set two alarms — one for when golden hour starts and one for its transition to blue hour. Shooting across both windows from a single position doubles your creative range without moving.

Stars & Milky WayHow dark the sky will be for astrophotography tonightMoon illumination %
Moonlit LandscapesWhether the moon is bright enough for moonlit scenesMoon phase + rise/set time

The maximum score for golden hour is 8/10 because cloud cover introduces variability that cannot be predicted from astronomical data alone. Always check the weather alongside the planner.

Night scores are more deterministic — the moon's phase is fully predictable. A new moon night reliably earns a 10/10 star score. A full moon earns a 10/10 moonlit landscape score and a 1/10 Milky Way score simultaneously.

📐 Seasonal Azimuth Shift

The sunrise azimuth shifts up to 48° between June and December solstices. Use the azimuth reading on the planner to plan which landmark will be front-lit on a specific date — essential for shooting temples, bridges, and skylines precisely.

📍 Blue hour cityscapes — open a city planner

Best cities for blue hour skyline & cityscape photography

These cities have the skyline density, waterfront reflections, or illuminated architecture that make blue hour especially dramatic.

🌌

Milky Way Window

The overlap between when the galactic core is above the horizon and when the sky is astronomically dark. Both conditions must be met simultaneously. Some nights have no overlap at all.

Overlap required
🌑

Moon Phase

The single biggest variable in night photography. New moon (0–15%) = dark skies for Milky Way. Full moon (85–100%) = excellent moonlit landscapes but galactic core washed out.

Key variable
🧭

Galactic Core Direction

The bright core of the Milky Way rises in the south-east and sets in the south-west from Northern Hemisphere locations. Face south for the most dramatic compositions. Visible March–October.

Face south

Check moon phase first

If the moon is above 25% illumination, Milky Way photography will be difficult. Plan your trip around new moon windows.

Check the Milky Way window duration

Even on a new moon night, the galactic core may only be visible for 2–3 hours. Know your window before traveling to a dark site.

Find a dark location

Light pollution from cities dramatically reduces Milky Way visibility. Travel at least 50–100 km from large urban areas and check a light pollution map.

Set your camera to manual

A typical Milky Way starting exposure: f/2.8, ISO 3200, 20–25 seconds. Use the 500 rule: 500 ÷ focal length = max shutter in seconds to prevent star trailing.

📍 Dark sky & aurora destinations

Cities & regions with exceptional night sky access

These destinations are close to dark-sky reserves, have dramatic night landscapes, or lie at latitudes where aurora borealis is visible. Open the planner to see tonight's window.

Neutral Density (ND) filters reduce light entering the lens without affecting colour, allowing much longer shutter speeds and motion blur effects even in bright conditions.

How stops work: Each stop doubles the required exposure time. A 10-stop ND (ND1000) multiplies shutter speed by 1024×. So a base reading of 1/500s becomes a 2-second exposure.

Filter StrengthLight ReductionMultiplierTypical Creative Effect
ND2 (1 stop)50%Slight motion softening
ND4 (2 stops)75%Moving people semi-blurred
ND8 (3 stops)87.5%Water beginning to smooth
ND64 (6 stops)98.4%64×Silky water, clouds moving
ND1000 (10 stops)99.9%1024×People invisible, glassy water

⚠️ Practical Tips

Focus and compose before attaching a strong ND filter — the viewfinder goes nearly black with ND1000+. Add 1 extra stop to compensate for IR cast some cheaper filters introduce at exposures over 30 seconds.

A timelapse compresses time by shooting individual frames at set intervals and playing them back at video speed. The interval determines how fast motion appears in the final video.

Decide your final video length

A typical clip is 15–60 seconds. 30 seconds of compelling motion beats 3 minutes of nothing happening.

Choose your playback speed

24fps gives a cinematic feel. fps × clip length = total frames you need to capture.

Calculate your interval

Shoot duration ÷ total frames = interval in seconds. Clouds: 3–8s. Stars: 15–30s. Traffic: 1–3s.

Check storage and battery

RAW files add up fast. Bring a spare battery or USB power. Plan for at least 10% spare card capacity.

SubjectRecommended IntervalNotes

Slow traffic / pedestrians2–5sGhost effect with people
Clouds (fast)2–5sDramatic storm cells
Clouds (slow)5–15sRolling cumulus, dawn colour
Sunrise / sunset colour5–10sCapture full colour arc
Stars (no trailing)15–30sMilky Way timelapse
Star trails30–60sStack in post for arcs

📱 Use the City Planner Calculator

Every city page includes a full timelapse calculator pre-filled with today's golden hour → astronomical dusk window, giving you exact shot counts, storage needs, and interval for your location automatically.

Star trails are created by stacking many long exposures. The Earth rotates 15° per hour, drawing arcs across the frame. Point toward Polaris (N. Hemisphere) or the South Celestial Pole (S. Hemisphere) for circular, centred compositions.

Shoot durationArc lengthNote
30 min7.5°Short arcs, good for first attempt
1 hour15°Clearly visible circular motion
2 hours30°Dramatic arcs, strong visual impact
4 hours60°Near-quarter circle, stunning panoramas
8 hours120°Full night shoot, maximum arc length

🔋 Practical Notes

Use 30–60 second individual exposures stacked in post (not one long exposure) to minimise sensor noise accumulation. The city planner's Star Trail Calculator gives you Polaris altitude, dark sky window, and arc length for your specific location.

Golden hour is the period shortly after sunrise and before sunset when sunlight is warm, low-angled, and soft. The sun's low angle creates long shadows and a warm orange-gold tone. Duration varies by latitude — near the equator windows can be 20–30 minutes; at higher latitudes they can exceed an hour.
Blue hour occurs during civil twilight when the sun is 0–6° below the horizon. The sky takes on a rich, even blue tone with no direct sunlight. Unlike golden hour, blue hour is perfect for cityscapes and architecture with artificial lighting, where you want balanced sky and artificial light.
A new moon (0–15% illumination) is ideal. The moon acts as natural light pollution — even a half moon can wash out the galactic core. Plan Milky Way shoots within 5–7 days of a new moon. Also ensure you are away from city light pollution and that the galactic core is above the horizon during astronomical darkness.
ND filters reduce light entering the lens without affecting colour. Each stop doubles required exposure time. An ND1000 (10 stops) multiplies shutter speed by 1024×. Use them to achieve motion blur — silky waterfalls, smooth seascapes — in bright daylight where long exposures would otherwise overexpose.
You need three inputs: shoot duration, desired final video length, and playback fps. These give you the interval between shots. For a 90-minute shoot for a 30-second video at 24fps: 720 total frames, one shot every 7.5 seconds. Always check battery life, card capacity, and whether the interval fits your light window.
From the Northern Hemisphere, face South. The galactic core rises in the south-east and sets in the south-west. From the Southern Hemisphere, face North. The core is best positioned March–October in the Northern Hemisphere.
Point your camera toward Polaris (Northern Hemisphere) or the South Celestial Pole (Southern Hemisphere). Earth rotates 15° per hour, so a 2-hour shoot produces 30° arcs. Use multiple 30–60 second exposures stacked in post-processing rather than one long exposure, to avoid noise accumulation.
Not at all. An overcast sky acts as a giant natural softbox, eliminating harsh shadows and producing flattering even light. Ideal for portraits, macro, forest scenes, and waterfalls with ND filters. Not suitable for golden-sky sunset shots, but excellent for almost everything else.
Divide 500 by your focal length to get the maximum shutter speed in seconds before stars begin to trail. For a 24mm lens: 500 ÷ 24 = ~20 seconds. On crop-sensor cameras, multiply focal length by the crop factor first.
