Raksha Bandhan 2026
Shravan Purnima · Shravan Purnima · Vikram Samvat 2083
Significance
Sisters tie Rakhi on brothers' wrists; Hayagriva Jayanti.
Shravan is the most sacred month for Shiva devotees, with Mondays drawing vast processions to temples. Raksha Bandhan on this Purnima celebrates the sibling bond through a ritually tied protective thread (rakhi).
A full moon occurs when Earth sits exactly between the Sun and Moon, with the Moon's fully lit side facing us. The Moon completes one orbit of Earth every 29.5 days — the synodic month — which is why Purnima falls on a slightly different date each solar month. The precise moment of fullness is instantaneous; what we perceive as a "full" moon spans roughly 12–14 hours either side of peak illumination.
How to Observe Raksha Bandhan
Sisters tie the Rakhi thread on the right wrist of brothers after a brief puja ceremony. Brothers offer gifts and pledge protection. Perform the ceremony during the auspicious muhurta — traditionally from mid-morning to early afternoon. Exchange sweets and share a family meal.
