Moon Phase Calendar 2026
Purnima ยท Amavasya ยท IST times for India
Track every full moon (Purnima) and new moon (Amavasya) of 2026 with exact Indian Standard Time. Today the moon is in its New Moon phase at 3% illumination โ 13.1 days remain until the next Purnima. All times are computed for the Indian subcontinent and reflect the astronomically precise moment of peak illumination or darkness, as observed from Earth's centre.
The Moon completes one full orbit of Earth every 27.3 days (sidereal month), but because Earth is simultaneously orbiting the Sun, the Moon takes 29.5 days to return to the same phase โ the synodic month. The Hindu calendar divides this synodic month into 30 tithis (lunar days). Purnima is tithi 15 of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha); Amavasya is tithi 30 / 0 of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha). Because tithis are defined by the Moon's angular separation from the Sun, they do not align with the 24-hour clock day โ a tithi can span parts of two calendar dates or be skipped entirely in a given location.
2026 contains 13 full moons โ one calendar month has two full moons. The second full moon in that month is popularly called a Blue Moon. This happens roughly once every 2.7 years because 12 synodic months (354 days) fall about 11 days short of the solar year (365 days). See the December entries in the table below.
