How IPO Listing Works in India
The Pre-Open Call Auction Session (9:00 AM – 9:45 AM)
IPOs do not start trading at the standard 9:15 AM market open. Instead, NSE and BSE run a call auction (also called the pre-open session) between 9:00 AM and 9:45 AM IST exclusively for IPO price discovery.
During this window, investors place buy and sell orders at various prices. The exchange's matching algorithm calculates the equilibrium price — the price at which the maximum number of shares can trade — and that becomes the opening listing price.
Why Does the IPO List at 10:00 AM, Not 9:15 AM?
The regular market opens at 9:15 AM IST, but IPOs deliberately list an hour later. This is because after the 9:00–9:45 AM call auction ends, the exchange needs the 9:45–10:00 AM buffer period to process matched orders, finalize the listing price, and propagate it to brokers and trading terminals before live trading begins.
NSE vs BSE Listing Times
Both NSE and BSE follow the same schedule simultaneously. An IPO that lists on both exchanges will begin trading on both at approximately 10:00 AM IST on listing day. There is no gap between the two exchanges.
Listing Price vs Issue Price
The issue price is the price at which you applied for shares during the IPO subscription. The listing price is the price discovered by the call auction — it can be higher (listing premium), lower (listing at a discount), or equal to the issue price. The difference represents your immediate gain or loss on listing day.
