About NSE & BSE Market Holidays

NSE and BSE trading holidays are officially announced by each exchange at the start of the calendar year, following approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Both exchanges follow the same equity market holiday calendar.

Muhurat Trading exception: On Diwali Laxmi Pujan, the markets are technically closed for the regular session, but NSE and BSE conduct a special one-hour Muhurat Trading session in the evening — typically around 6:00 PM to 7:15 PM IST. This session is considered highly auspicious and is used for symbolic investments at the start of the new Hindu Samvat year.

Weekend holidays: If a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, Indian stock exchanges do not observe a compensatory weekday off. The holiday simply falls on a non-trading day.

Other market segments: Commodity markets (MCX) and currency derivatives segments may follow slightly different holiday lists. Always verify with your broker for the specific segment. The lists above apply to NSE and BSE equity (cash) and F&O segments.
