About February

February is the second month of the Gregorian calendar, with 28 days in common years and 29 days in leap years — making it the shortest month. Named after the Latin Februum, a purification ritual. The 29th day (leap day) occurs every 4 years (with century exceptions). February hosts Valentine's Day globally. For Indian communities, it often coincides with Vasant Panchami (Saraswati Puja) and sometimes Maha Shivaratri depending on the lunar calendar. The month marks late winter in the Northern Hemisphere, with spring festivals approaching.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does February have only 28 or 29 days?
February's shorter length is a historical artifact of the Roman calendar. The original Roman calendar had only 304 days in 10 months. When January and February were added, February received the fewest days. The leap year system (29 days every 4 years) was introduced by Julius Caesar to synchronize the calendar with Earth's solar orbit (~365.25 days).
When is the next leap year?
Leap years occur every 4 years: 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036. Century years (1800, 1900) are NOT leap years, but years divisible by 400 (2000, 2400) ARE. The next leap year is 2028.
Does Mahashivratri always fall in February?
Not always. Mahashivratri falls on the 14th night of the lunar month of Phalguna (or Maagha per some traditions), which can fall in late January, February, or early March depending on the lunar calendar.
